CTE

Tech Prep

Career and Technical Education provides students with many options including entering the workforce upon graduation and/or attending a junior college or university. It is important to note that certain CTE courses are eligible for college credit when taken in high school. This process is known as Articulated Credit through the Tech Prep Program.

What is Tech PREP?

Tech Prep is a way to start a college technical major in high school. In a Tech Prep program, you begin your course of study in high school and continue in a community or technical college. The result is a certificate or associate degree in a career field.

Tech Prep programs combine the academic courses needed for success in college AND technical courses that begin to prepare you for a career.

Students in Tech Prep programs can earn college credit through:

Content-enhanced articulated courses (statewide articulation and/or local articulation);

Dual credit
(concurrent enrollment); and/or

College Board Advanced Placement (AP)

Articulated Credit:

In order to receive articulated credit you must meet the requirements of the articulation agreement between your school district and the college or university. You do not pay for this credit, but you must attend the institution granting the credit.

Local Articulated Credit is the result of a partnership between specific post-secondary institutions and an independent school district. Statewide Articulated Credit provides students with the opportunity to attend participating community colleges across the state of Texas. Students gain college credit for courses they master in high school to avoid duplication while pursuing higher education. In order to receive this credit, students must complete all necessary requirements outlined by the community or technical college.

Requirements:

Students must earn a minimum grade of 80 in the articulated course
Articulated course must be noted on the high school transcript
Articulated Credit is awarded by the post-secondary institution when all requirements are met
It is the student’s responsibility to follow-up with appropriate college personnel to get the credit award
